Kaylee dreamed of the adulation, fame and love she could receive at his side on stage. Not to mention the escape from the cold suffocation she endures at home. No, please don't mention it, it might trigger an episode. She's going to have to look hard inside herself to figure out her true feelings and intentions. To do that she will need to tear down the walls she surrounds herself with. If she can do that she may find that Sam will always give her love whenever she asks, but, she has to ask. And that's the hardest thing for Kaylee, because she's always been shut down for asking. That's not Sam's fault, but it will be a long time before Kaylee comes to that particular epiphany, and longer still before she stops blaming him for it.
Along the way to that realization Kaylee and Sam form a band that they name Firefly. Kaylee uses the band as a way to garner the attention from Sam that she desperately craves. But by doing so, she forces him out of a private and obscure life, leading to consequences that they must face together. The ultimate question is whether their journey will tear them apart or bring them together.

The two high school juniors, who are from opposite ends of the high school social and academic spectrum (Kaylee popular and college bound, and Sam, introverted and not academically inclined), share an addiction to rock music. To how it is created, to its lyrics, to its presentation. Through their shared experience with making music, which occurs largely in Sam’s basement, Kaylee experiences truly being cared for, for the very first time in her life. Their bond grows as they move from playing the music from bands with which they are familiar, to creating sound together, which drifts naturally into the trusting sharing of their own poetry, or eventual song lyrics. Each of their ideas is only complimented by the other’s contribution. Until Kaylee starts to worry about abandonment by the only person who really sees her, they make quite a team.As the two teens are sharing in this uncontrollable passion for music, though, they also explore many a life lesson. Questions of what makes a family suitable, what makes a human being worthwhile, of how very differently people express love, and how utterly impossible it can sometimes be to communicate, even with those who know and love you best, are woven into the story. Even the topic of physical abuse among teenagers is dealt with in this extremely compelling novel.
I would highly recommend Stu Kane and Hannah Wilkerson’s Kaylee and Sam: The Birth of their Band, to young adults and adults alike. It has the makings of an excellent movie, as well.

I don't know if this happens to you, but when I read a book I often start imagining the personality of the author From my reading, there are some authors I'd like to hang out with, others I'd rather never meet. After reading Kaylee and Sam I have no doubt that Stu Kane and Hannah Wilkerson must be a real blast to be around. They've managed to write a wonderfully quirky novel of teenage romance and angst -- with rock music to boot.
I have to say that I was quite skeptical when I was encouraged to read this book. It is definitely not in the genre that I'm accustomed to. But immediately I realized I was in good hands as the principal characters were introduced in the first pages. Kaylee and Sam's interaction is truly electric and charming.
What's more, the authors manage to increase tension, then release it, then build it up again in successive waves that give the reader time to recover from one event before entering the next. This is truly great writing. I was extremely pleasantly surprised.
The characters pull me right into their world. The descriptions had just enough detail for me to picture the scene in my mind, but not too much to disrupt the flow. This was a really great story.
A talented musician, Sam, and his the popular girl next door who falls in love with him. Or does she fall in love with the idea of a rock star?
A great story of a band's journey, teen drama and a steamy romance!
An adventure through the minds of high school rock band hopefuls, I found K&S to be an all-too-familiar reminder of what it takes to bring a band together.
The authors do a good job of bringing their characters together through skillful dialogue, internal reflections and high school drama. Even with diametrically opposed characters (the loner and the cheerleader), their relationship is realistic and believable and you find yourself caught up in wanting to see them succeed.
Oh, and five stars for working in generous Firefly references throughout!

I've always been a fan of teenage dramas and going into this I didn't know which type I would be getting. I was pleasantly surprised as I quickly discovered this was a character piece with a plot line that made me very interested. This story story is simple yet diverse. It seemed like our main characters, Kaylee and Sam, kept broadening out and developing until the last page.
Kaylee, a sweet girl that is rash in decision making, meets Sam, a seemingly simple yet deep fellow, and together they decide to form a band to compete in the Battle of the Bands. The thing I enjoyed most about this is the writers weren't afraid to write adult situations within a genre that is often timed 'kidded out'. This book ultimately adheres to the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll tropes, but given that it never takes place some club, or a high school party, it feels very natural and believable. This story is mostly written with the point of view of Kaylee in the spotlight, however I think Sam could of had more of a spotlight specifically in the first act, but due to Sam's character type I think it well enough the way it is.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It falls in line with teen dramas that I like Degrassi, The OC, My So-called Life, etc. Some of the side characters seem one-dimensional (Kaylee's Mother and Father, Jimmy, Sophie) but they well enough for their purposes. At times the dialog could be hammy with certain words, but nothing to hurt the experience. Overall, this story is a very good read with excitement, romance, sadness and fun.
